MOTOR returns October 28th with the second release from Oakland by way of Olympia’s HOM – another excursion into the hinterland of Ashley Svn's dense, enigmatic and industrial focused aesthetics. Responsible for MOTOR's seminal second release, Svn has been busy cultivating their creativity and refining their process, and the results are nothing short of brilliant. M is a cavernous affair, spacial and functional, the constant push/pull of primal, ancient rhythms played against, the immersive, ethereal spaces conjured by modern machines. The opener, Voicest, drags you into its world of subterranean sonics and indecipherable rumblings gradually, a steady groove adding momentum to the mix. It sets the stage perfectly for the immediacy and kineticism of Milkdust, a monolithic dancefloor stomper replete with crunchy claps and a scorching bassline, easily lending itself towards utility. All of this leads into the more melodic and subdued world of Osha, gentler, cozier textures stenciled out by a syncopated beat. This EP is a full three course meal, an affair bitter, savory, and sweet by turns, both cohesive and decidedly varietal. A palette for damp basement clubs and worn out warehouses.

I've always had time for techno producers who aren't cowed by the tyranny of the kick drum and with "Traded Structures" Apartment Fox has delivered a masterclass in the fine art of left-field, EDM abstraction. If you prefer your dance music to wear hobnailed boots, look elsewhere; these tracks, each a vibrant melange of textures and timbres, are designed to beguile not bang. Nic Brown
