Following up 2015’s Migration EP with another four-tracker on the ever-discerning Blankstairs, as well as an upcoming release on Truth or Consequences, we have here something a little different from our homegrown dub and ambient purveyor. Force Reduction taps into a more unhinged side of Alex Markey’s productions, manifesting a comparatively maximalist approach that brings his flair for rave-ready grooves and sturdy sound design to the forefront. His knack for lean, spacious melodies is as apparent as ever, but there’s a crunchy flavor to this material that harks back to the hard-edged sounds of old-school Techno and late-night parties off the M25. From the tasteful broken beat of Astoria to the overdriven sequencer workout that is 170, this EP presents a portrait of an Archivist and artist very much in touch with Techno’s storied past, present, and future.
