about

Motor is proud to present the debut release from Portland’s talented and elusive, Jon Ulrich. “February’s Curse” is the product of a common internal creative dialog, the kind many artists wrestle with on a regular basis. The idea that presenting your work via a public platform creates a certain vulnerability, was in this case, a direct inspiration for the recordings themselves.

MTR019 consists of 2 entrancing long form pieces that delve deep into the cerebral sides of dance music. “FEB-CRSSA” starts off with a collage of droning tones and textures while a subtle kick drum gradually emerges, slowly bringing the tempo up to a rather driving pace. The subdued melodic droning creates a specific feeling of submersion while additional tones, percussive elements, and metallic-like textures float freely, seemingly unhinged, across the track’s suspenseful surface.

“FEB-CRSSB” commences with a similar energy. Beginning with a menacing, high-frequency tone, low sub-frequency rumbles materialize creating a subtle sense of movement. These rumbles are paired with hi-speed, insect-like, sounding percussive elements that drift in and out of the stereo field. Almost exactly halfway through the track bursts open into a full on DnB / breaks tinged barrage that manifests a similar emotional energy as “FEB-CRSSA”, but with a certain militant vigor. The conclusion of the track ends in a metallic and bell infused half-time rhythm that invokes a strong sense of peace and resolution. The entirety of the pieces paints the image that the listener has witnessed the very turmoil within the artist that birthed the material as a whole.
